Menage Construction

Constructing all weather equestrian riding arena/menage surfaces relies on using the correct materials at every stage of construction.

There are varying schools of thought on the materials that should be used when constructing equestrian riding arena/menage surfaces but all will agree that good preparation is the key. This means choosing the correct materials and having the knowledge to utilise them correctly.

Drainage is a key part of the dressage arena. The arena needs to be functional during the whole year and not suffer from harsh weather. This means it needs to drain well. The most common method is called the Herringbone Pattern.

Once the drainage layer is complete, cover with a Woven Membrane to strengthen and stop your layers from mixing up. This is often called the base layer.

The next stage for your horse arena is to add an aggregate that allows for slight compacting but still lets water pass through to the drains.

On top of the aggregate, you need a Non-Woven Geotextile Membrane, also called Fleece Membrane. This separates the layers, allows water to pass through and makes the horse arena more stable.

There are many options of material for the top finish of your horse arena. The most common is silica sand. We advise using 100mm of the sand with any finished product of your choice.

Horse Fencing

The correct fence and design are vitally important to take into consideration the type of horse, their management and easy access for machinery to service and maintain paddocks.

Fencing is a major capital investment that should be carefully planned before construction... we are here to make that planning easier.

Equine fencing should be both functional and attractive, it needs to be capable of keeping animals safe and secure in their fields.

There is a wide choice of fencing types to suit your needs that we can offer:

  • Post and rail (2-6 rails can be accommodated)
  • Post and horse wire mesh (height - 0.9m - 1.2m - 1.5m - 1.8m)
  • Post and electric wire/tape - options of mains, solar and battery electric fence energisers

Loafing Areas

Would you like to incorporate a turn out area adjoining or near your stables for your horses to mooch around and stretch their legs, while keeping them close by?

A loafing area makes life easier all round – your horses can be turned when it is too wet for them to go on the grass especially if you are on wet Shropshire clay like us.

When they’re not busy eating, many horses like to stand singly or in small groups, swishing flies and watching the world go by. They often choose a favourite area in the field, frequently near a fence or gate, this spot becomes a patch of bare dirt.

The rains turn these dry, dusty areas into sticky, slippery mudholes that just get bigger and deeper as the season progresses.

Mud can be a shoe-pulling, tendon-tweaking nightmare for horse owners — but must it be an inevitable part of winter?

If you’re struggling with the underfoot conditions, what can be done to fix muddy gateways?

Where can your horse stretch his legs in the winter months without being up to his hocks in mud?

The answer to the problem is to install mudcontrol hoofproof slabs topped with sand or pea gravel.

The area is levelled and a geotextile is put down a top layer of sand or pea gravel is installed and compacted to provide a smooth surface.

The geotextile keeps the gravel from being pushed down into the soil and disappearing after a few years.

Irrigation Systems

Expertly designed equestrian irrigation systems from our team Equestrian arenas are unique environments that carry a host of specialised irrigation requirements.

We are pleased to supply and install a customised equestrian irrigation system specifically designed for your sporting ground.

We can deal with the particular needs of equestrian centres. We’ll ensure your system provides the greatest level of comfort for both horse and rider.

One of the biggest problems facing any busy equestrian centre is dust and deepness of the surface.

Dust is uncomfortable, dirty, and can impede vision and breathing for both horses and riders.

We can design, supply and install a bespoke equestrian irrigation system that will cut down on dust throughout your entire facility and correct watering will provide the firmness required for the perfect riding arena/gallops surface.

We can install both moveable and fixed sprinkler systems depending on your individual needs.
